Things that CANNOT screen for breast cancer

I posted this photo back on October 14, 2009 with the caption: 

“breast cancer is an excellent reason to buy kitschy, pink shit”

It was a half-sarcastic remark. On the one hand, funding breast cancer research and prevention is important. On the other hand, the whole pink thing and the whole making cancer sexy thing (we’ve all seen the “save our twins” bras, right?) made me feel uncomfortable. Are people only willing to pay attention to a health issue if it’s made to be sexy? I mean, I don’t see a lot of prostate cancer schwag! Where are my “Save our balls” panties?

At the core of my discomfort was the way they took a serious issue and made it un-serious—not just fun, but frivolous. And now they’ve taken steps backward in terms of dealing with that issue.
