Rick Perry's Good Idea →
…Yet there was more to Perry’s campaign than blunders. It was also a campaign of “ideas.” Few of them were good, alas. For example, reducing the salaries of members of Congress by half, to eighty-seven thousand dollars a year, is not a good idea. Neither is a tax cut that would net the richest one per cent more than five thousand dollars a week and the unrichest twenty per cent less than two...

Good Riddance, 2011 (things I said impulsively and...
Context--Date 2 and I were eating dumplings at Chinatown Express when he poured his own cup of tea.
Me: Oh god, I'm never going get married!
Date 2: Excuse me?! (Looks alarmed)
Me: Oh no--no, it's not like that. Don't take it like that. In Taiwan, they say that if the person who sits across from you pours his or her own tea, it means you'll never get married because you're not an attentive wife. It's a joke. I forget that I can't say things like that around my friends who don't do China stuff.
Date 2: *laughs nervously*

WOIO News Covers High-Profile Ohio Trial with... →
CLEVELAND (AP) — It’s courtroom drama crossed with “Sesame Street,” as a television station barred from using cameras during a high-profile corruption trial covers the highlights with a nightlypuppet show. It stars a talking squirrel “reporter” who provides the play-by-play in an exaggerated, “you won’t believe this” tone. “It’s a...

– “Breakings” by Henry Taylor I’ve been looking for this poem for years. I read it in 9th grade English class, and I remember having a moment where I realized that there was more to poetry than perfect meter and silly rhyming schemes. It had resonance. I remember pinning the poem...

Date 1: I just think it's a really unique opportunity
Me: That's incorrect
Date 1: Excuse me?
Me: uh... nothing. Don't worry about it.
Date 1: No really, what's incorrect?
Me: "Really unique" is grammatically incorrect. If something is unique, it doesn't need a qualifier. Oh god, I shouldn't have said that.

Why the new LEGOs for girls sucks. →
fullydomesticated: Thank you Ms. Magazine. So, so right about the new LEGOs for girls.  All of you parents out there who want building toys for your girls try LEGOs Ultimate Building Set, or if you don’t want to buy LEGOs try these or these. There are tons out there that aren’t pink or with boobs (who needs those anyways?!)

把它埋起来: Not a Grown-up Thing to Do →
Maiqilai, what a great story about getting over a grudge! (For those of you who don’t know Aaron, he’s one of my favorite people on earth and was one of my fearless group leaders in North Korea! You’ll never meet a more mature 20-year-old in your life.) I agree that I should have just said hi—that is, after all, the grown-up thing to do, and one hopes that people change...

Tanning Beds Could Be Addictive? →
Not that I ever bought into the tanning thing anyway, since I have a pretty acute fear of aging. This is fascinating, but not that surprising if you have some neuroscience knowledge (I took one class and loved it).

Not a Grown-up Thing to Do
I saw a girl I really did not get along with in college at Whole Foods tonight. Instead of letting it go and saying hello, or at least ignoring her, like a grown up, I hid in the bathroom and texted my friends about it.  Well, we can’t grow up too quickly.

A thing that happened on an airplane
I found a tin canister shaped like Darth Vader under the seat next to me as I was getting up to leave. It contained a pair of Star Wars underpants, size medium. I tapped the young guy sitting in front of me lightly on the head. “Excuse me,” I said, “did you lose this?” He grinned and said they weren’t his. The girl next to me started shaking her head before I could...
