The main reason I would like a smartphone
is so I can find an app that will record phone conversations with my mother in high quality audio.  Today I told her that I am going to a Passover Seder, and she asked “do you need a little hat?” She then transitioned to explaining the benefits of not being religious.  [In Chinese accent] “We can get along with everybody!  You marry Jewish guy, we all wear little hats and feel...

Surprisingly, I'm fine
A garbage truck hit me while I was riding my bicycle a few days ago.  Not head on—the front of his truck got around me just fine, but the back of him clipped my tire while trying to pass me on the corner of Eliot and JFK.  I flew off diagonally, but didn’t hit my head.   An ambulance was already parked conveniently across the street, as it was early and there is a Dunkin Donuts on that...

When adult-like people act like teens
Today on the bus ride home I sat behind a neatly-dressed woman who sprawled across the bench as if it were her bed.  She was drafting a letter on notebook paper and though she was clearly in her mid-thirties, she had the large, bubbly handwriting of a 13-year-old.  Every capital letter filled the entire space between the blue lines and letters that dipped below the line like p, g, j and q...

Worth Every Penny
Last week I attended a silent/not-silent auction at the Kennedy School for Government to benefit the Summer Internship Fund, which provides financial assistance to students doing unpaid internships this summer.  Prizes were donated by faculty and students and ranged from awesome (weekends in Nantucket, a signed 1st edition Kurt Vonnegut novel) to instructional (hip-hop dancing classes) to castaway...

MAGIC MOLLY: Mystik Journeymolly →
One weekend when I was too young to remember the details we visited a private trapeze course owned by an author with whom my mother was acquainted. We were in Northern California, naturally. I swung on the trapeze once, did something called a “trust leap”, and was frightened. A trapeze course is…
